Vasto, September

Trabocchi Coast

5 September 2022, in Vasto. The day began in a pale stone villa above an olive grove; the story ends at the water’s edge, at 7:40 in the evening, before the party.

In between, a civil ceremony outdoors with the sea behind it, and a pier that walks out into the water.

The morning, in the villa above the olive grove. At 10:38 he was already in his shirt, standing at the window.

The groom in his shirtsleeves by the window, smiling with his head down as he gets ready.
A white-haired woman holds the groom’s face in her hands and kisses his cheek.
The bride’s silver sandals hanging from the trunk of an olive tree.

Early afternoon among the olive trees. At 1:52 she stepped out alone under the branches; at 2:15 everyone was walking down to the lawn for the ceremony.

The bride alone among the olive trees, small in the early afternoon light, the trees’ shade on the gravel.
The bride among the olive branches, her face half hidden by the leaves, the bouquet in her hand.
The olive grove above the sea, a white villa and the headland in the distance, before the ceremony.

The civil ceremony, outdoors, with the sea behind it. From the rings to the signature in the register, twelve minutes went by.

The bride’s hands untying the rings from the green cushion on the ceremony table.
The bride’s hand signing the register, between the lace tablecloth and the flowers.

At 7:24 we were on the pier, at 7:40 on the shore. In those sixteen minutes the sky went from pink to blue.

On the pier the bride laughs in the foreground; behind her the groom, out of focus, tilts his head towards her.
The bride, seen from behind, looks at the groom standing by the pier railing, the sea beyond.
On the pier the bride smiles, eyes lowered; the groom, his cheek against her shoulder, looks at her. Behind them, the bay.
The groom leans on the railing and turns towards the bride, who rests a hand on his shoulder and laughs.
The couple’s faces close together, laughing, the sea soft behind them.
At the pier railing the groom, seen from behind, kisses the bride; ahead of them the sea and the headland.

At 7:38 there was no one beneath the pier. Two minutes later, on the shore, came the kiss this story opens with.

Beneath the pier: concrete pillars stepping out into the sea, no one around.
